Outside Plant Engineer

Pay range: $66,560.00 – $85,000.00/annually.

unWired Broadband is searching for a hands-on and driven Outside Plant Engineer to join our Fiber to the Home team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager – FTTH, this position is responsible for coordinating all phases of an outside plant build to ensure that builds are completed as designed. This includes all outside plant jobs involving the installation, removal, or rearrangement of outside plant facilities. This position requires a working level of knowledge in all technical aspects of fiber networks and is responsible for in-person validation of the new and existing field design and layout of the OSP telecommunications network to include aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities.

Essential Duties:

  • • Conduct site surveys and field all projects during Engineering phase, including design pole verification (Katapult), Sticking using Height Stick, parcel verification, design verification, utility verification, identify routing obstacles, and aerial to underground percentage verification.
  • • Coordinate with Engineering Manager to verify preliminary designs against real-world conditions of the build area. Project types may include Fiber to the home, fiber to the business, Fiber to the MDU.
  • • Network design: determine cable types, equipment needs, and routing configurations for optimal performance and reliability.
  • • Help to develop accurate fiber engineering, permitting, construction budget estimates and timelines for approval by company leadership.
  • • Design projects by using digital and non-digital field data collection devices like Height stick, Measuring wheel Laser’s, Lidar, Fulcrum, Katapult.
  • • Create construction prints/permits using ArcGIS Pro 3.2, AutoCAD, Vetro, Google Earth etc.
  • • Permitting and regulatory compliance: navigate legal requirements and obtain necessary approvals for installation.
  • • Coordinate with Engineering Manager and construction contractors to verify build completion was per design, ensuring quality control and obtain/verify as-built documents for entry into our Vetro GIS Fiber Network database.
  • • Locate fiber optic cables as needed, use OTDR for verification of light levels on Projects.
  • • Routine inspections and maintenance: check for cable damage, equipment malfunctions, and environmental hazards.
  • • Fault detection and repair: identify and resolve service disruptions and network issues.
  • Emergency response: Address critical outages and restore communication lines promptly.
  • Documentation and reporting: Maintain detailed records of network performance, repairs, and project updates.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • • Minimum 5 years’ experience in FTTH OSP Fiber plant design, business FTTx fiber design using AutoCAD for drafting and general FTTH construction knowledge from an OSP engineer perspective.
  • • Working knowledge of rights-of-way / Encroachment Permits, property rights, private easements, and permit acquisition.
  • • Experience in permitting with PG&E and SCE, Frontier and AT&T, Caltrans, Municipal Permits, CEQA.
  • • Knowledge of Ocalc and or other loading software.
  • • GIS experience in the telecommunications industry related to project design OSP Engineering or the ability to learn.
  • • Project management experience is preferred.
  • • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
