Fiber Drop Assistant
Pay Range: $20.00 – $25.00 / hr
unWired is searching for a Fiber Drop Assistant to join our Fiber Installation team. Reporting to the Fiber Operations Supervisor, this position is responsible for supporting the installation of fiber optic drops to residential and commercial customers. This role includes assisting with site preparation, equipment setup, material handling, and site restoration, while ensuring all work meets quality and safety standards.
Essential Duties:
- • Assist in the trenching, missile boring, or aerial installation of fiber drop cables.
- • Handle conduit placement, fiber pulling, and minor terminations at customer premises.
- • Help set up work zones, including utility locate verification and safety signage.
- • Assist in restoring disturbed areas, including backfilling trenches, concrete/asphalt patching, and landscaping repair.
- • Support the operation and maintenance of trenchers, missile boring machines, and other tools.
- • Maintain an organized work vehicle and ensure all necessary tools and materials are readily available.
- • Follow all safety protocols, ensuring personal protective equipment (PPE) is used correctly.
- • Assist in identifying hazards and ensuring utility locates are respected during excavation.
- • Assist in testing fiber connections for signal quality and documenting results.
- • Support the Lead in submitting completed work reports and photos.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- • 3 years of experience in residential and commercial fiber optic or telecommunications drop installation.
- • Experience with fiber drop testing tools (e.g., OTDR, light meters).
- • Proficiency in operating trenching and missile boring equipment.
- • Ability to operate small to medium-sized heavy equipment.
- • Ability to perform fiber splicing and troubleshooting.
- • Strong team leadership and mentorship abilities, including clear communication and delegation skills.
- • Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements, confined space procedures, and underground utility locate systems.
- • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- • Strong ability to assess site conditions and determine effective installation methods; proactive in troubleshooting challenges.
- • Problem Solving: identifies and resolves problems timely; gathers and analyzes information effectively; develops alternative solutions; uses reason when dealing with emotional topics.
