Streaming News to Watch Out For in 2022
From streaming service launches to new movies being added to our favorite platforms, there’s a lot to look forward to in the world of streaming in 2022. Here are some highlights of what to expect:
CNN is launching its own streaming service
CNN’s own streaming service, called CNN+, is launching next year. It will include 8-12 hours of live content, as well as a large library of on-demand and original shows and films. Pricing and an exact launch date is not available yet, however you can expect CNN+ to launch in the first quarter of 2022.
Thursday Night Football is moving to Amazon Prime
Although Thursday Night Football has been live streaming on Prime Video since 2017, the NFL recently announced it will no longer air TNF on Fox, starting in the 2022 season. Select games will air on your local station, but if you want to catch every TNF game, you’ll need to hop on Amazon Prime. Prime subscribers can stream Thursday Night Football on the Prime Video app, available on most smart TVs and mobile devices.
Your favorite Universal movies are coming to Peacock and Amazon
Earlier this year, Peacock and Amazon struck a streaming deal with Universal Studios, which will drastically expand their streaming library. Beginning in 2022, all new live-action movies from Universal Studios will be available on Peacock 120 days after its theatrical release. After a 4-month period on Peacock, these new titles will land on Prime Video. Because of this deal, Prime Video is also acquiring a large library of existing Universal movies, including the Bourne, Fast & Furious and Jurassic Park franchises.
A flood of unscripted reality shows are coming
Because unscripted reality programming is cheaper, faster to produce and more likely to garner buzz, it is quickly becoming a staple of many streaming services. Thanks to the success of many of Netflix’s reality shows, such as Love is Blind, Selling Sunset and The Circle, other streaming services are beginning to invest heavily their own original reality shows. In 2022, you can expect to see a lot more original reality programming on your favorite streaming services, including HBO Max and Hulu.
Your favorite sports may be getting their own streaming service
The NBA recently announced their new streaming service, slated to launch in time for the 2022-2023 season. It will be an interactive and customizable experience for their fans. During live broadcasts, viewers select which commentary to listen to, view player stats in real time, switch camera angles and more. Pricing and a launch date have not been announced. If you are a baseball fan, the MLB is also in talks to launch its own streaming service for its over 150 games per season.
